Hearthstone - Games review

If you're thinking about one of the most iconic online card games ever created, then Hearthstone would be on the top of the list.

Activision Blizzard developers were really on to something when they decided to branch out to the digital card game genre back in 2014; the acceptance rate was through the roof and a lot of people got addicted to it fast.

It's one of those games that you just want to keep going over and over, enjoying every minute of fun gameplay alone or with your buddies. So, let's dive in and understand why this game is so popular.

You start off with the main menu which is neatly designed. The idea is that you've entered an inn and you're about to pull up a chair and enjoy a nice friendly game of cards with any of the other patrons there. They designed a friendly and enthusiastic innkeeper dwarf to give you pointers and tell you about your progress in the game.

The game has a lovely design with different playing modes; you get the play mode where you battle with other random people, whose skill levels are somewhat similar to yours. However, I found it to be random and they might have better or worse decks than I do.

You got the solo adventure mode where you play against A.I players related to the story and plot of the expansion you chose; the game has various expansions to choose from and they add more quite often. Each story/expansion introduces a variety of new unique and fun cards to earn.

The game has a tavern brawl mode that changes every week; it gives players a fun and interesting mechanic every week with distinctive rules and funny outcomes. For example, you could have each card that you play get cloned and you'd have two of them at once!

Finally, you have the special game mode button where you decide to play the rated arena card games or the battleground card games that came out recently, where you battle against 7 other players! I tried that new mode and it was fun, but it was a little messy and it had some bugs that need fixing; it's still in the beta though, so that's normal.

The game has a shop for some micro-transactions and buying card packs; I think it's normal nowadays to have these deals, but, sometimes, it might not be fair. Also, you have a crafting tab to check the different cards that you have and possibly craft more with dust; you disenchant extra cards for more dust too.

You get new quests every day and they can be random; finishing them gives you gold and other rewards where you can buy card packs to strengthen your deck.

I think this system of different game modes is pretty nice and it gives players a chance to try something different each time and you can spend hours playing around in the crafting tab checking your decks, depending on their mood or time.

It's perfect that you can play these modes whenever you want and in any device you have; you can enjoy them on your smartphone when you're out.

You have various classes to choose from and they're one of the notable heroes of Warcraft too. You can be either a Warrior class, who is usually Garrosh, a Paladin and become Uther, a Mage and play as Jaina, a Priest and be Anduin, a Hunter who's represented by Rexxar, a Druid and battle as Malfurion, a Shaman and play as Thrall, a Rogue and become Valeera, or a Warlock and see what it's like to be in Gul'dan's shoes.

The game has evolved over the years and its developers have added a lot of new characters for your class choices; some of them can be earned in the game, bought from the shop, or rewarded during a promotion.

The hero system is nice. My favorite class is the Paladin and I really thought it was great that they used Uther, one of my all-time favorite characters in Warcraft. The variety of choices was very appealing to me, too.

I believe the card designs along with the variety you have are pretty amazing; it's cool how you get to see a lot of the unique ones and their abilities. The game is based on the characters and legendary heroes of Warcraft, so all of your cards will be about them; it could be a Murloc, raptor, stormwind champion, or even an angry chicken card! Also, the well-known heroes and villains of the game are legendary cards; these are powerful cards that have extremely overpowered abilities.

Each card has an attack power icon and a health power icon; they designed it in a way that your cards can carry on depending on its health and special abilities. The cards can be normal, rare, epic, and legendary; each card can flip to be a golden card, giving it unique animations and a higher value.

Some cards can be duplicated and it's normal to have more than one. Nevertheless, the legendary cards are unique and you can only have one of each.

The card system changed over the years because of the expansion packs and, quite frankly, because some cards were too powerful. So, they introduced the "Wild" system where wild cards cannot be used during standard games; I believe that was fair because it was getting out of hand before the fix.

Overall, the system is optimal now, even if there are a few cards that are too powerful.

When you start playing, you will get a chance to either start first with 3 cards or to start second but with 4 cards. You can change cards if the random ones you got aren't appealing.

You will notice that you have crystals on the right side; they are like power crystals and each round you get more, along with an extra card. The more crystals you have, the more powerful cards you could use. The system is pretty fair because you have a time limit for each round.

The quirky and cute design of the surrounding areas of the match is amazing; you could start clicking stuff with your mouse and play around in-between rounds, which is pretty enjoyable. The graphics are not too shiny but good enough for a card game.

The animations and special effects every time you do something during matches are interesting. They give the game more flair.

In a nutshell, this game is excellent and addictive, and you'd lose track of time playing it.
