In the fourth and final installment to the thrilling saga, Bella is once again forced to choose between her love for Edward and her connection to Jacob, but this time she knows the consequences her choice will have, either she will choose the dark and seductive allure of becoming immortal or pursue a fully human life.
Having struggled with the choice for years, Bella will finally make her decision, but with it comes a chain of ripple effects, stretching far and wide, and threatening everything she holds near and dear.
Meyer knows her audience by now, well enough to keep the plot moving forward with momentum and wit, without deviating from the central story. After all, she knows that at the heart of it all is a teenage girl with a choice to make.
She writes from experience, balancing the world of the supernatural, and the human with grace and precision, her straight forward and modern style succeeding in capturing the essence of the story.
While Bella does show some progression in this story, it is dampened by the series of events surrounding this growth, and some questionable last-minute curveballs that left many readers, myself included, with a bad taste in the back of their mouth.
Undoubtedly, the character with the most amount of growth has to be Jacob Black, the werewolf best friend who is relegated to the shadows. He shows a tremendous amount of growth and maturity in spite of his poor treatment.
But the rest of the engaging characters are sidelined here, giving the Cullens little to do but fill in the gaps while the main event looms over the horizon. Unfortunately, the ending felt rather anti-climactic and abrupt considering the amount of time spent building up to it
