Roald Dahl has always been an author with a wild imagination. With Charlie and the Chocolate factory he manages to create not only the most peculiar and fascinating inventions inside Mr. Wonka’s chocolate factory but also shape strong characters that teach various lessons.
Charlie and his family are portrayed as an extremely poor family, who are on the verge of starving to death. They eat cabbage and cabbage soup and every year, on his birthday, Charlie is gifted one bar of chocolate.
Mr. Wonka, who had closed off his factory to prevent competitors from stealing his creative inventions, decides to open his factory to five lucky golden ticket winners. While Charlie does have a tough life, he definitely does not lack in luck as he finds the fifth golden ticket placed in his chocolate wrap.
As Mr. Wonka welcomes the five children into his factory, we get a glimpse into Dahl’s genius mind and his miraculous candy inventions. From Everlasting Gobstoppers to three-course chewing gum meals, Willy Wonka makes our mouths drool as he brings our childhood candy fantasies to life.
The most fascinating aspect of Dahl’s sense of humor and witty talent is portrayed in the other four children; how he vilifies the other four golden ticket winners and punishes them for their vices.
From greedy Augustus Gloop who disregards the rules and drinks from the chocolate river, only to get stuck in a pipe, to Veruca Salt, who is a spoiled brat and tries to grab a squirrel, only to be deemed a ‘bad egg’ by the fluffy creatures and thrown down a garbage bin. The only exception of the five children is Charlie, who is rewarded for being the only good and kind child
However, the book is not void of darkness; it not only portrays the effect of parenting on the outcome of children’s characters but also how Charlie was reprimanded for his honesty and kindness. This book takes you on a majestic adventure and is a must-read for both children and adults alike.
