Twenty years after being sent back to her own time, Claire Randall is back in Scotland amidst the hills she remembers with fondness and sadness, to tell of the legend of Craig Na Dun, about being torn between two men, a young Scottish warrior by the name of James Fraser, and a love so powerful it made Claire choose the uncertainties and danger of his own time rather than the comfort and familiarity of hers.
Now, Brianna her daughter, the very image of the man she was forced to leave behind, will finally learn the truth of what happened all those years ago as Claire fought against time, in an effort to rewrite history itself to save both the man she loved and the child she was to have.
A follow up to the massively successful and beloved Outlander, Gabaldon had her work cut out for her especially with a story as inspiring and as heart-wrenching as Claire and Jamie’s.
With her expressive style, and her ability to bring to life one of the most celebrated love stories of our time, Gabaldon once again brings to life the Scottish Highlands and even takes us across the sea to Paris where Charles Stuart, heir to the Scottish throne, resided.
Mixing real-life historical events is never easy, but Gabaldon does it with such ease, all while paying close attention to the smaller details, making it all the more realistic.
Claire and Jamie’s love story is even more interesting than ever especially as the characters are forced to endure hardships and trials, forcing them to grow together and apart.
Far better paced than its predecessor, and with better momentum, Dragonfly in Amber does the original justice and sets the tone for the rest of the series.
