Early Life

Jason Momoa was born on  August 1st, 1979 in Honolulu, Hawaii. His parents led simple lives that encouraged creativity and expression. His father,Joseph Momoa, was a photographer, while mother Coni Momoa, was an artist. He was later raised by his mother in Iowa up until he graduated high school. He then moved back to Hawaii to attend university, where he studied marine biology.

During this time, his modeling career began to pick up and soon international fashion designer, Takeyo Kobayashi discovered Momoa’s potential. In 1999, Jason Momoa became Hawaii’s Model of the Year and modeled at the Governor’s Fashion Show for Louis Vuitton.

 Acting Career

In 1999, he auditioned for a lead role in the widely known television show Baywatch. Momoa was able to beat out 1000 auditioners for the role of Jason Iowane on the show, and played it for several years up until the show ended in 2001. He then traveled extensively and became well versed in the principles of Buddhism in Tibet.

In 2003, Momoa moved to L.A. and starred in  Baywatch: Hawaiian Wedding, and Tempted. Soon after, Momoa made an appearance in the television series, North Shore, which ran for only 20 episodes in 2004. The role he played of Ronan Dex in the series Stargate: Atlantis, was the pivotal one that gave his acting career a huge boost.

For this role in particular, he really pushed his limits as an actor and  learned martial arts, and even changed his appearance by growing out dreadlocks.  Consequently, the show became very popular, especially in Europe and Asia, and won several awards, as well as nominations.

Around this time, Momoa got into a fight in a bar in L.A., which led to the famous scar above his eye; little did he know that  it would suit the role he would be playing next. In 2011, Momoa starred as Khal Drogo in the renowned and critically acclaimed series, Game of Thrones.

This character earned him the CinemaCon Award for Male Rising Star, and nominations for Scream Award for Best Ensemble, as well as Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series. Later, in 2012, he appeared in Bullet to the Head, and then starred in, directed, and co-wrote Road to Paloma in 2014, which premiered in the Sarasota Film Festival.

Momoa proceeded to appear on television from 2014 to 2016 when he played Jean Lafitte in The Red Road and Jim Thorpe in Drunk History. He also made a brief appearance in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016 where he played the role of the superhero Aquaman.

He then took on the role of a cannibal, Miami Man, in The Bad Batch, and Joe Bright in Sugar Mountain. Momoa then became executive producer of the show Frontier, and starred as Declan Harp in 12 episodes in the series. This performance landed him a nomination for the Canadian Screen Award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Dramatic Role.


In 2017, he acted in Once Upon a Time in Venice, and in Justice League, where he once again portrayed the role of Aquaman, though more prominently. In 2018, he appeared in Lin Oeding’s Braven.

After several portrayals of the superhero Aquaman, Momoa finally got a standalone movie of the character. In 2018, Momoa starred as Aquaman, in the movie Aquaman, alongside co-stars Nicole Kidman, Amber Heard, Willem Defoe, and Patrick Wilson. The movie was a huge box office success, making over $1 billion worldwide. Shortly after this success, Momoa starred in See, a sci-fi series debuting on Apple TV+.

Personal Life

Momoa first saw Bonet on TV when he was 8. Ever Since, he had the biggest crush on her. He then first met her in 2005 at a jazz club, where a friend of Momoa’s introduced them. In 2005, Jason Momoa and actress Lisa Bonet started dating. They had their first child together, Lola Lolani Momoa, on July 23rd, 2007.

Around a year later, on December 15th, 2008, their son, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa was born. Bonet has a daughter Zoë Isabella, with her ex-husband Lenny Kravitz. It was thought that the couple was already married in 2007, however, it wasn’t official up until their legal marriage in October 2017.

In 2008, Bonet returned to acting on Life on Mars, thanks to Momoa, who had helped her get back into acting. In 2014 they starred in their first film together (Road to Paloma). In 2015, Zoë, Bonet’s daughter, spoke up about the nature of their family and how they get along. She stated that Momoa and her father got along quite well and that her dad, Kravitz, really loves, and is close to Lola and Nakoa-Wolf.

The scar on Jason Momoa’s face is a result of a quarrel that he got involved in on November 15th, 2008, at the Bird Cafe in Hollywood. Someone smashed glass in Momoa’s face, leading to a scar and 140 stitches.

In December 2017, Momoa was featured in Men’s Health Magazine where he talked about his fitness routine and spoke about the fact that fatherhood taught him how to love himself more and the value of self-care. He claims that fatherhood generally helped him become a better person.

In 2019, he announced that he is partnering with the Ball Corporation to produce canned water, stressing the importance of getting rid of plastic bottles. He said that it was his duty, as Aquaman, to clean up the ocean and land, and make way for a better life for his children, and all other kids for the matter.
