Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower 5)

Wolves of the Calla (The Dark Tower 5) by Stephen King - Book Review

After resuming their journey towards the Dark Tower, Roland and his ka-tet come across a small town called Calla Bryn Sturgis. There they meet Father Callahan, a priest from the world of Jake, Eddie and Susannah.

But all is not as it seems as the ka-tet discover doorways back to their own worlds. With the Dark Tower waiting for them, a plan is set in motion that will ensure they can reach it once and for all.

But the folks of the town need the help of the last gunslinger, an evil force coming to steal their children once a generation. After pleading with Roland and his friends for help, the gunslinger begins to train the townsfolk for a coming battle; a battle that will leave them exposed. But can the ka-tet beat the approaching force, or will their journey end in the Calla of the Wolves?

A great continuation of the tale as Roland and the gang are caught up in a different battle of sorts. While the story holds true to the previous books, it takes yet another turn, leading the reader away from the original journey and onto one that introduces us to yet another portal.

Father Callahan is a pleasant surprise, his story continuing from where it left off at the end of Salem’s Lot. His part in this book feels a little like Wizard and Glass felt for me when it came to Roland’s tale. It’s like a little sidestep, a tale within a tale but supporting a different tale again.

If you manage to hold on tight and allow the story to take you where it needs to go, I promise you won’t be disappointed. While I did struggle in a couple of spots, overall, it was a worthy continuation of the Dark Tower.
