Se7en, or, Seven, is a crime/drama movie that is gripping from the mid movie, to finish. Although the movie was nominated for several academy awards, the movie has several flaws, yet is still really interesting and quite informative.
Written by Andrew Kevin Walker, and directed by David Fincher, the duo was able to create a movie that goes beyond a typical crime detective movie. This movie is one of the few that started on the silver screen and ended up as a novel, rather than the opposite, due to its suspenseful nature.
The cast includes four incredible stars, yet one only appears near the end, with a surprising twist. Those stars are Brad Pitt as David Millis, Morgan Freeman as Detective Lieutenant William Somerset, Gwyneth Paltrow as Millis’ wife Tracy, and Kevin Spacey as John Doe.
The “WHAT’S IN THE BOX?!” movie follows two detectives, one on the verge of retiring and one new to the city who search for a serial killer who kills his targets depending on one of the seven deadly sins originating from Christian theology.
Those sins appear in the order of gluttony, sloth, greed, pride, lust, envy, and wrath. The last two appear at the moment of the plot twist when it turns out that John Doe has decapitated Tracy, David Millis’ wife, where Millis decides to kill John Doe when he finds out.
Some issues with this movie include the slightly poor acting seen from Brad Pitt – it was seen as quite unnatural and in some scenes, a little robotic in others, but concluded on a high note with a scene that will always remain one of the most memorable scenes in movie history – “what’s in the box?!”.
Some of the writing as well throughout the movie is not as elaborate nor creative and seems in some parts quite dull. The movie really does start to pick up by the middle of the movie, when the action increases, and the final plot twist starts to unravel.
The movie takes an overall 7/10 for its cleverness in its second half, as opposed to the less compelling first half.
