The Hundred-Foot Journey - Movie Review

A story of culture, rivalry, and love; that is what The Hundred-Foot Journey is all about. The movie, directed by Lasse Hallström, is one you should watch with a bowl of warm food in your hands, and large emotional capacity in your heart. The Hundred-Foot Journey tells the story of a humble Indian family, The Kadams that have found themselves all of a sudden in a small French village after having to flee India when times became tough.

The family of six settles into the village and their father, played by Om Puri, decides to buy an old restaurant for a house and to turn part of it into an Indian restaurant called Maison Mumbai. Little did he know that the location he chose would change his and his family’s lives forever.

Back in India, one of the Kadam boys, Hassan (Manish Dayal) formed a strong relationship of making food with his mother as a tutor. She taught him all about the Indian spices and the magic they add to any food, which made him into an incredible cook moving forwards.

The Kadams soon came across the owner of the Michelin Star restaurant a hundred-feet across from their own, Madame Mallory, played by Helen Mirren, who was simply not convinced the village had room for more than one restaurant. She fought them with all her power until she eventually discovered the greatness of Hassan as a chef with the helpful tips of her sous chef, Marguerite (Charlotte Le Bon), who believed in Hassan’s abilities and grew fond of him.

Soon enough, Hassan proves himself as a Star chef, getting Madame Mallory her second Michelin Star and securing himself a prestigious job leading a kitchen. He did not forget about his family though, and came back for them, partnering with his love, Marguerite, on running Madame Mallory’s kitchen and promising her a third star.

The movie is a fusion of love and delicious dishes, all coming together with suspense and emotions that give the audience a taste of both France and India.
