With all the magical fundamentals out of the way, we get to the real action! In “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets”, we delve deeper and deeper into the He Who Shall Not Be Named’s world and who he was before he turned into the movie’s main antagonist.
Of course, some facts are still missing as there are a few more books-turned-movies with more of the same plot, but the good thing about these movies, so far, is that they are not at all confusing. Although some things are missing from the books, the movies are not in any way, shape, or form, difficult to understand.
This movie revolves around the same main plot, Harry trying to defeat Voldemort, who we find out in this movie, is actually Tom Marvolo Riddle. As much as he was against muggles, we also find out his own father was a muggle, and that he himself is a half-blood!
This movie, although not dark by any means, does have some dark themes. For instance, we start with deception which is seen through professor Gilderoy Lockhart (Kenneth Branagh) who pretends to be an outstanding wizard, which we later find out is a complete fraud, and even tries to wipe Harry and Ron’s memories away, which he utterly fails to do.
We also see appearances from two essential book characters, Dobby, voiced by Toby Jones, and Moaning Myrtle, played by Shirley Henderson. Dobby appears very early on in the movie to warn Harry about not returning to Hogwarts as “terrible things are about to happen”.
On the other hand, we see Myrtle later on in the movie, in, of course, the second-floor girls’ bathroom as she cries and moans about the fact that someone threw a “book” through her head. That book, of course, was Tom Riddle’s diary that leads Harry into the past and eventually to the chamber of secrets itself.
This movie, along with the first one is pretty similar to the first two books, regardless of some of the missing information. However, the one issue that can be seen, and upsets some fans, is how the characters are quite dissimilar to those in the books.
For instance, Ron is quite clever, and Harry is constantly angry and sarcastic in the books; yet we see Ron as extremely daft, and Harry as the smart calm one. Yet if the movies are taken as they are with no comparison to the books, they are quite magical, to say the least. This movie fully deserves an 8/10, especially for its quality given its year of release!
