Grey’s Anatomy Season Fourteen - 2018 - Review

Season 14 of Grey’s Anatomy premiered in September 2017 and ended in May 2018 and includes 24 episodes. Last season ended with a fire that started when intern Stephanie lit a rapist on fire to rescue a little girl as well as herself. This fire led to a huge explosion that burned several wings in the hospital.

Season 14 starts with Miranda Bailey, chief of surgery, repairing the hospital as well as mending issues she had had in the previous season with Richard Webber.

Although season 13 saw drama in terms of Meredith and Maggie liking Nathan Riggs, he chose Meredith as he had liked her from the beginning. Things start getting more complicated when Owen finds out that his sister is actually alive.

Meredith is the one to tell Nathan, as he and Owen’s sister were once engaged, and Meredith felt like telling him would be the way to show Nathan that she fully accepts him leaving her. By the end of the season, Nathan and Megan leave for good, which begs the question, why have this storyline in the first place?

One of the biggest issues Grey’s Anatomy included this season was the fact that Meredith was nominated and won a Harper Avery. She did in fact do a groundbreaking surgery as she did an abdominal skin flap transplant on Owen’s sister. However, previously, in earlier seasons, Cristina lost the award even though her work was better than Greys and the other nominees.

The reason that Cristina did not win was that Catherine Fox, who runs the Harper Avery Foundation (which turned into the Catherine Fox Foundation after sexual allegations) also owns a huge share of Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital.

But since then, that has not changed, and the hospital is still owned by the majority by the Catherine Fox Foundation. How did Meredith win, and not Cristina? That was a huge plot hole that everyone realized and showed the extent to which this season was not well planned.

Two things that happen at the end of this episode is that Jo and Alex finally get married, as well as April and Matthew from previous seasons. While Jo and Alex stay on in the show, April and Matthew leave, as well as Arizona. Arizona’s story ends when she realizes that she wants to go to New York with her daughter and her ex-wife Callie. These seemed like hasty decisions made to take these cast members off the show but without killing them off.

The performances were not remarkable or memorable, even when Meredith won an award that she had been dreaming of her entire career. The storylines were dull, and the script did not help either. Overall, this season was not in any way up to par with earlier seasons. It gets an overall rating of 6/10.
