Grey’s Anatomy Season One (2005) - Review

Directed and written by Shona Rhimes, Grey’s Anatomy is a medical show to be reckoned with. Full of twists and drama, and an extremely attractive cast, Grey’s Anatomy features plot lines that are both riveting and suspenseful.

The main plot of the show follows its main character Meredith Grey and her life as a surgical intern at Seattle Grace teaching hospital where her mother, who once was an award-winning surgeon before getting Alzheimer’s, used to work.

She, and several other interns, Izzie Stevens, Alex Karev, Cristina Yang, George O’Malley, are going through their first years as interns while also trying to balance their own personal lives.

The pilot, or the first episode is one of the more interesting episodes as we meet the first two primary cast members, Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, and Derek Shepherd, played by Patrick Dempsey.

The scene shows Derek getting up from what seemed like a drunken one night stand with Meredith, and telling her that he had a great night, while she could not remember his name and was basically rushing him out the door to get to her first day as an intern – only to find out that he, of course, is the Chief of Neuro at Seattle Grace – twist number one!

One of the other bigger twists in season one was the fact that Derek Shepherd turned out to have a wife! Although she had cheated on him with his former best friend and they practically left each other, it was a huge blow to Meredith and her relationship with Derek.

One notable cast member is Kate Walsh, who plays Addison Shepherd-turned-Montgomery, Derek’s ex-wife. Her acting as a hurt wife/ex-wife who is pining over two men at the same time is nothing short of fantastic.

For a secondary actor to be that noticeable, her acting was truly memorable, and even relevant. Walsh’s performance left people sympathetic towards her situation, whereas other actresses could have portrayed this character as bland and unimportant.

Keeping it short and sweet for a first season, Grey’s Anatomy starts with nine episodes only, whereas other seasons were set to an average of 23 episodes.

For the audience who are beginning to watch the show, this is a great feature as it does not commit them to a full 23/24 episodes of a show they have yet to delve in to.

However, the show is captivating, and it would be quite difficult to not continue watching. Shonda Rhimes keeps it intriguing by adding several backs and forth dialogues, and plot twists that have the audience on their feet.

So far, season one is timeless and can be watched in 2005, 2020, and 2030. For a medical drama show, this season takes a 9/10.
