The Flash - Season One - Review

The Flash season one premiered in October of 2014, and ended in May of 2015, with a total of 23 episodes. The series is directed by Glen Winter and developed by Greg Berlanti who is also the creator of “You”, Andres Kreisberg, and Geoff John.

Based on the comics released under the same name, The Flash airs on the CW Network, and the set location is in Vancouver, British Columbia.

The Flash comes from a series of other DC universe shows, or “Arrowverse” – other shows include Arrow, Supergirl, DCs Legends of Tomorrow, Batwoman, Black Lightning, and several others.

The Flash follows Barry Allen, played by Grant Gustin, a forensic scientist in the Central City Police Department who gets struck by what seemed to be “lightning”. He goes into a coma for 9 months only to wake up and find himself possessing super speed abilities.

Throughout his entire life, he was picked on for being slow, and when the lightning struck it was only fitting that the superpower he got was speed. As a child, he witnessed his mother being murdered by a ball of light of which he thought was either a man or had a man in the middle of the light. His father however got framed for the murder and went to prison. He joins law enforcement to make sure no one ever gets wrongfully accused for anything again.

After being in a coma for 9 months, he wakes up to meet Caitlin Snow, played by Danielle Panabaker, Cisco Ramon, played by Carlos Valdes, and Dr. Harry Wells, played by Tom Cavanagh, in S.T.A.R Labs which stands for Scientific and Technological Advanced Research Laboratories.

They help him hone his speed, while the man who took him in after his mother died, Joe West, played by Jesse L. Martin, stands idly by and watches as Barry turns into a hero.

He soon finds out that the lightning that hit him actually came from a particle accelerator that blew up in STAR Labs and has affected thousands of others. Some of them turn evil, while a few others, like Barry, turn into heroes.

Across the first season, Barry must battle those who have turned evil, with the help of his team in STAR Labs. He also battles with the fact that he likes Joe’s daughter, Iris West, played by Candice Patton, who only sees him as a brother. In the meantime, he still goes back and forth between his current job and trying to find answers on who or what killed his mother.

Overall, the acting and the scriptwriting in season one are fairly good for a show based on a comic book. The storylines are not too far off from the comic books and are actually quite interesting. The music is catchy and very fitting to each scene which makes it more compelling. This season gets an overall rating of 8/10.
