The Office - Season 8 - Review

Season 8 of The Office was a make-it-or-break-it kind of a situation for the writers. Since the departure of Steve Carell, the creators seemed to be in a situational dilemma. Doubts like, whether the office needed a new character as the boss or could the supporting characters run the show entirely were reeling in.

The first few episodes seemed like a bunch of trials-and-errors to determine the show’s performance and receptivity. Even with the absence of Micheal, who was the star of the show, I could not refrain myself from watching the entire season in the anticipation of lulling the mundane.

As an honest review, it was completely messed up. The show lost its charm and ended up in a pitfall. The only good thing about this season is familiarity. Since I watched 7 seasons already, I got familiar with the characters and there was no stopping point to their exceptional acting abilities. The reason why this season survived can be pointed to the quality of dialogue-delivery and consistency with previous plot lines.

A major mistake of characterizing Micheal Scott as the protagonist of the show made it even more difficult for the creators to get the show together. In my personal opinion, the show should have been cancelled. But major credits and applauds for the creators and writers who still tried.

What makes the season worse is the recurring appearance of Nellie Bertram and Robert California, who are the two new characters additions to the show. The characters lack flavor and if I cut to the chase, they are pretty annoying. An interesting turn of events makes Andy the boss of Scranton branch.

Despite these intricacies, I sat through the entire season as I could not give up just yet. Dwight (Rainn Wilson) took it a notch up and held the show together, which is quite commendable.
